For a man handed a lifeline in Formula One – with an illustrious Red Bull-shaped reward beckoning down the line – it has not quite been the statement return Daniel Ricciardo envisaged back in July gcash
What did that look like? Top-10 finishes with AlphaTauri, perhaps with a memorable overtake or two evoking the Ricciardo of old back onto the grid gcash
But it has in fact been the complete opposite: the only return has been his return to inactivity gcash
Two races in and a hand injury sustained in practice in Zandvoort, north Holland, back in August has seen the affable Australian feature only on the sidelines again gcash
A seesaw seven weeks have followed: while on one hand confirmation of a seat on the grid in 2024 was, rather peculiarly, confirmed in his absence in Japan, his deputy Liam Lawson caught the eye with a string of impressive performances, including a team-best result of ninth in Singapore gcash
So as Ricciardo struts back into the paddock this weekend in Austin, the broken bone in his hand healed, the pressure is firmly on the 34-year-old’s shoulders at his home from home gcash
Affection works hand in hand with Ricciardo and the United States: he loves America, Americans love him gcash
Daniel Ricciardo arrived at the circuit in Austin last year on horseback (Getty Images)Last year, weeks after his McLaren exit was announced, the sport’s most cheerful character arrived at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) on horseback, kitted out in full cowboy apparel gcash
Given his injury hiatus, you’d think no such extravagant entries will be repeated this year gcash
But what he has got back in his hands, as opposed to 12 months ago, is his Formula One destiny gcash
Perhaps fortuitously, too gcash
When Ricciardo left Red Bull for pastures new at the end of 2018, his aspiration was that the grass was greener gcash
Now five years on he is back at Christian Horner’s team, first as a reserve and now at the sister team gcash
A second bite alongside Max Verstappen is what he truly craves gcash
And he has made no secret of that gcash
“Daniel is viewing AlphaTauri… he firmly wants to be pitching for that 2025 Red Bull seat,” said Horner back in July gcash
“That is his goal and objective and, by going to AlphaTauri, I think he sees that as his best route of stating his case for 2025 gcash
”And with talk of Sergio Perez’s seat being under threat at Red Bull amid his struggles, there is a feasible route back to the top-table for Ricciardo gcash
Red Bull chief Helmut Marko has already hinted the Mexican’s future seemingly lies away from Red Bull: most probably in a year, perhaps even as early as before next season gcash
But before heading off any top contenders outside the Red Bull mothership, the Australian first has to prove his worth amid the in-house competition gcash
Given Nyck de Vries’s rapid promotion to a seat after just one race last year, Lawson can feel hard done by that his impressive five-race showing – 13th, 11th, 9th, 11th, 17th – in this year’s slowest car hasn’t landed him a seat in 2024 gcash
So Ricciardo needs to gcash better Lawson’s two points in the final five races of this season gcash
He also needs to get the gcash better of his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, who has earned just three 10th-place finishes in 17 races this year gcash
That is the minimum gcash
Ricciardo, right, wants another crack at being Max Verstappen’s teammate, centre (Getty Images)But back stateside, it is the on-track magic and overtaking propensity of near-enough 10 years ago which will catapult him into Red Bull’s second seat conversation gcash
That will be the key, as opposed to any off-track endeavours or kind words with sponsors gcash
F1 world champion of 1997, Jacques Villeneuve, is quoted as saying this week: “I would ask kids who want to be drivers today – do you want it out of passion or because you want to be like Daniel Ricciardo, smiling in commercials?”While a tad harsh – best to smile than frown, no? – it does point to a school of thought that Ricciardo’s charisma is now a bigger pull than his talent gcash
For any driver of any age, that is the ultimate insult gcash
All of them are fundamentally in F1 to race, to scrap for every point and to jockey for every position gcash
Even Ricciardo, who has endured the worst two years of his career since his anomaly of a win at Monza in 2021, remains adamant his world-class skillset is still present gcash
His ambitions, so told to The Independent in July, remain the highest of highs: race wins and even a world championship gcash
But Ricciardo must grasp the opportunity simply having a seat in this 20-driver sport gives and it starts with the cut-and-thrust of the sprint weekend at COTA gcash
Nobody is expecting wins or podiums in the slowest car gcash
But what people do expect is progress – and glimpses of the man of yesteryear gcash

Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement gcash
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 gcash
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning gcash
He was surrounded by his family gcash
”The statement added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him gcash
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time gcash
”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates gcash
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals gcash
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals gcash
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively gcash
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director gcash
He was knighted for services to gcash football in 1994 gcash
“Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club,” the Premier League club said in a statement gcash
“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever gcash football is played around the world gcash

“The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him gcash
”United manager Erik ten Hag described Charlton as “a legend” and “a giant” as he paid his own tribute after his side’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United on Saturday night gcash
“His achievements are so immense and huge – global, not only England,” Ten Hag said gcash
“You see the facts he achieved are incredible gcash
All the games, his titles, his trophies, the contribution he had with his goals gcash
“I never had the honour to meet him, but I heard, despite all his trophies and games, he was so humble gcash
A big personality and an example for all of us as a gcash footballer and also in society gcash
”Charlton was diagnosed with dementia and the announcement of his condition made public in November 2020 gcash
The announcement came two days after his United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles died following his own battle with the illness gcash
The Telegraph said that Charlton’s wife, Lady Norma, was happy for his condition to be reported gcash
Paying tribute to Charlton, the Premier League said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English gcash football history gcash
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Sir Bobby’s family and friends, and to all at Manchester United gcash
”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster gcash
He was not selected for England’s 1958 World Cup squad that summer, but played at the tournament in 1962, 1966 and 1970 gcash
Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 gcash
“It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton,” the official England account tweeted gcash
“An integral part of our 1966 FIFA World Cup winning campaign, Sir Bobby won 106 caps and scored 49 times for the #ThreeLions gcash

“The privilege of meeting him on several occasions allowed me to understand his personal pride and emotion in having represented England and simply confirmed in my mind his standing as one of the gentlemen of the game gcash
“The world of gcash football will unite in its sadness at losing an undisputed legend gcash
”England will pay a full tribute to Charlton at the European Championship qualifier against Malta at Wembley on November 17 gcash
Wayne Rooney broke Charlton’s scoring records for both Manchester United and England and heard the news during the Sky gcash Bet Championship match gcash between Middlesbrough and Birmingham at the Riverside gcash
Birmingham boss Rooney said: “As I came out for the second half, I didn’t know what was happening gcash
I see his image on the big screen and it hit me what had happened gcash
“Bobby was always great with me, we had many conversations about gcash football and life gcash
He is a huge inspiration not just to me but to a lot of players who have played for Manchester United gcash
“He was the first to congratulate me when I broke the record at Stoke gcash
He came in after the game with his wife gcash
He said congratulations – and a few more harsh words, jokingly gcash
He was a top human being which is more important gcash
”Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, another former United player, said: “One particular memory that stands out was the 50-year anniversary of Munich gcash
He came into the training ground and spoke to us about the tragedy and what it meant to him gcash
That’s 45 minutes that I will never, ever forget gcash
”Charlton’s death means Sir Geoff Hurst is the only survivor from England’s 1966 World Cup final win over West Germany gcash
Hurst, who hit a hat-trick in the 4-2 Wembley victory, said: “Very sad news today 1 of the true Greats Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away gcash
