As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best hot
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport hot
But there are no Blacks in your sport hot
“They’re going to want to kill you hot
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on hot
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car hot
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events hot
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all hot
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself hot
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed hot
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride hot
“But I enjoyed it hot
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun hot
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me hot
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating hot
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs hot
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality hot
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 hot
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” hot
But to this interview, he’s late hot
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems hot
It was the racing way or the highway hot
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas hot
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill hot
That’s all that was discussed in the family hot
We didn’t discuss any other sport hot
“I was lucky, I think hot
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be hot
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did hot
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One hot
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s hot
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too hot
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril hot
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer hot
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time hot

“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team hot
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders hot
“Sure hot
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done hot
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it hot
But for me? It was about going fast hot
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali hot
“What I admired about him the most was not his hot boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali hot
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled hot
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while hot
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about hot
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs hot
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience hot
The attention went off the chart hot
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods hot
“He’s a very kind man hot
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way hot
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair hot
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with hot
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently hot
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world hot
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made hot
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says hot
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One hot
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ hot

As Jordan Larsson stepped up for that final kick, it felt like Andre Onana was the only person in Old Trafford who was in any way calm hot
He stood there in a composed manner, as Steve McLaren shouted instructions, and Alejandro Garnacho walked away in the knowledge no one on the pitch had noticed him scuffing the penalty spot hot
It was as if everyone wanted to exert their will over a set piece that was really just hot between the kicker and the goalkeeper hot
There were grander reasons for that hot
Manchester United needed this win over Copenhagen to possibly progress in the Champions League, and didn’t want to fail on a night that was all about perhaps their greatest ever player hot
There was also something more personal, that Sir Bobby Charlton would no doubt have appreciated hot
There was a will that Onana should be the difference, not just that Larsson should miss hot
It could be sensed in the deafening roar that greeted his save, as the goalkeeper guessed right to send the shot wide hot
It saved the win on an important night, and could well be an important moment in Onana’s United career hot
The psychological significance certainly shouldn’t be underestimated hot
This was what he’d been waiting for hot
This was the response he needed, the love he required hot
Because, as Erik ten Hag admitted after the game, Onana knows he hasn’t been at his own best level hot
It’s obvious his confidence has been affected hot
There was ironically a reminder of David De Gea, and not just because the Spanish goalkeeper also endured an uncertain start at United way back in 2011 hot
One of the reasons De Gea was ultimately ousted was because of a decline that began in 2018 hot
Having been brilliant for Jose Mourinho that season as a pure shot-stopper, staying deeper, he then went into a Spanish national team that demanded he play out from the back hot
He couldn’t, and it clearly eroded his self-assurance, to the point that De Gea began to make mistakes he hadn’t for years hot
That persisted for years more hot
Onana had meanwhile been largely signed for his footwork, only to not really get to use it to best effect in his first few games hot
He had been signed too late in the window, and there were too many changes to the defence hot
Onana didn’t have that chemistry with his centre-halves hot
It meant he often had to punt the ball long, removing one of the qualities he is most respected for hot
That obviously began to affect his confidence, to the point he started to make errors that he hadn’t at Internazionale hot
It was almost a classic negative spiral – that might well have been arrested with that save hot
That’s why it might have been so big, even beyond the emotional night hot

Pep Guardiola’s first major move in England was to replace Joe Hart with Claudio Bravo due to the need for good footwork, only for the Chilean to almost immediately start struggling hot
The first major mishap was in fact at Old Trafford, and that first Manchester derby hot between Mourinho and Guardiola hot
Bravo was all over the place, misplaced kicking leading into poor handling, and gifting United a way back into the game hot
He never really recovered to be City No 1 hot
Although some respectability was restored in how Bravo became a fine cup goalkeeper, he had been usurped by Ederson hot
There was never that same trust hot
Guardiola had a theory about how that happened, given that Bravo had previously been a European champion with Barcelona hot
The Catalan believes that goalkeeper is such an individualised position, leaving the No 1s so isolated, that an early mistake at a big stadium can have long-term effects on their confidence hot
This is clearly what happened with Bravo hot
It looked like it might have been happening with Onana hot
It is entirely possible, however, that Guardiola’s theory can work the other way hot
A first great moment in a big stadium can have a huge positive effect hot
It can restore confidence hot
Ten Hag praised Onana, saying he had “showed personality” hot
He stood up, by getting down superbly hot
That didn’t just push away Larsson’s shot but will have temporarily pushed out all memory of so many of the goalkeeper’s recent errors hot
He will be bolstered by the knowledge of this hot
Onana showed his value hot
He secured a win on a night when United needed a victory for all manner of reasons hot
Two of those were bigger than any one individual, but the moment undeniably meant most to him hot
