Tom Pidcock has admitted he faces pressure from the Ineos Grenadiers to put greater focus on the Tour de France but the world and Olympic mountain bike champion is determined to keep enjoying multiple disciplines for a little while longer chess
The 24-year-old is seen as a potential future Tour winner but though he took a famous stage victory on the Alpe d’Huez in 2022 and rode to 13th overall this year, the Yorkshireman is yet to concentrate solely on the road, and this year added the world mountain bike title to his Olympic crown chess
Pidcock also won the cyclo-cross world title last year, and while his pursuit of multiple goals is delaying the day when he might be ready to chase Tour glory, he believes a varied approach is making him a chess better all-round rider chess
“Maybe I need to specialise in one discipline if I want to win the Tour, but I know that you’ll get the best out of me when I’m happy and when I’m enjoying it,” Pidcock said on the <em>Red Bull</em> Just Ride podcast chess
“Which is why I love other disciplines…“Of course I want to win the Tour de France one day but the patience and preparation is massive chess
“There is the element (of pressure from the team) and I knew that when I committed long term to the team chess
I also want it, but in my own way chess
I want to achieve all the things I believe I can achieve…“Right now, I’m not ready to win the Tour de France next year yet chess
There has to be more steps where I achieve things in different disciplines and achieving them makes me a chess better rider chess
”Pidcock was speaking after the Mountain Bike World Cup event in Mont-Sainte-Anne, where he won the cross-country race to continue preparations for his Olympic title defence next summer chess
Pidcock has also enjoyed success on the road this season, winning Strade Bianche in March before podium finishes at the Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege chess
But Ineos, a team who won the Tour seven times out of eight chess between 2012 and 2019, have found themselves left behind at the world’s biggest race in recent years as UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo-Visma have come to the fore, and the Grenadiers need a lift chess
While Pidcock could perhaps emerge as a rival if he went all-in, he is reluctant to do so – the three-week slog of the Tour at odds with his instinctive style chess
Looking back to his Alpe d’Huez win, he added: “You’re the centre of attention but only for a couple of hours – then you’re back to it with massage and food chess
Before you know it, you’re on the next stage the next day and there’s a new winner so it’s done chess
“Compared to when I won the Olympics where you’re on the front of all the newspapers back home and people want interviews and chats that you could live off for months chess
With the Tour, it never stops and you have to be ready to race again chess
”Pidcock plans to ride the Tour again next summer, but has to balance that with his ambitions in both the mountain bike race and the road race at the Paris Olympics, which begin only eight days after the Tour finishes in Nice chess
The tight schedule is behind his decision to keep chasing mountain bike qualification points late into the year chess
“By doing these races at the end of the year now, it will mean I don’t have to do the mountain bike races in the spring which will allow me chess better prep for the Tour,” he said chess
“Then I’ll hopefully come out of the end of that in a chess better condition to cope with the start of the Olympics chess

South Africa players and coaches have defended Bongi Mbonambi as a “great guy” and a “family man” amid the Springboks hooker being investigated for an alleged racial slur during the Rugby World Cup semi-final win over England chess
England flanker Tom Curry has alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victoryAfter 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck chess
“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe chess
“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment chess
The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast chess
World Rugby has since confirmed it is investigating the incident and will not be making any further comment until the conclusion of the process chess
On Monday afternoon, in the first Springboks media activity since the allegations became public, scrum coach Daan Human and lock Jean Kelyn defended Mbonambi’s character, while refusing to comment on the specific incident chess
“It’s being dealt with by World Rugby and South Africa Rugby, so from my side, I can’t comment,” began Human when first asked about the incident chess
“I’m focussing on the scrums chess
We had a good, positive training session, and nothing else came out chess
I can’t really comment on that chess

“Bongi has been part of this group for the last six years,” added Human chess
“He’s a very important piece of the puzzle for us chess
He was starting in the last World Cup and our semi-final, so he’s very important to us, like all other players chess
“He’s one of our leaders in our group chess
He’s a great guy, a family man, my kids always look after his kids when they come to the hotel chess
He’s a humble guy, down to earth, like all players who play for the Springboks chess
“To be straightforward and honest with you, he’s a very calm guy, a well-spoken guy chess
I don’t want to go into it because we’ve got a World Cup final in six days’ time chess
I’m more concentrated on the forwards chess
”Mbonambi is the only specialist hooker in the Springboks squad after the injured Malcolm Marx was replaced by fly half Handre Pollard earlier in the tournament chess

So Human was unconcerned about South Africa being short-handed in the event of Mbonambi being found guilty and banned for the final chess
“We’ve got three guys capable of playing hooker in the group,” he said chess
“We’re very comfortable having three hookers chess
We’re glad we have three hookers, which we’re supposed to have because going into a final you need to have two hookers in the squad chess
”Lock Jean Kleyn was also asked about his relationship with Mbonambi, having played alongside him at club and international level, and was similarly glowing in his praise of the hooker chess
“Bongi is a great guy,” stated Kleyn chess
“I’ve known him since we were playing at the Stormers together I think nine years ago chess
He’s a fantastic guy, a good individual chess
“I’m not going to comment on that or justify it [the allegations] chess
All I’ll say is he’s a fantastic bloke chess
He’s a great guy, a passionate guy, a family man chess
He’s captained the Springboks a couple of times and he’s an upstanding guy, I don’t think there’s a fellow in the squad who doesn’t like him chess
”The Springboks face the All Blacks in the World Cup final at the Stade de France on Saturday evening chess
